The Independent Authority for Fiscal Responsibility (AIReF) has appointed Roel Beetsma to its Advisory Board, thus completing the renewal of the board for the final phase of Cristina Herrero’s mandate, which ends in March 2026.
Beetsma is a professor of macroeconomics at the University of Amsterdam and a former member of the European Fiscal Board (EFB). His appointment strengthens the international dimension of the AIReF Advisory Board, which has traditionally included a European profile. Additionally, Beetsma provide extensive experience in the analysis of European fiscal policies.
The Advisory Board now consists of ten members, following the appointment of Erik Janeba as a member of the EFB last April. AIReF extends its gratitude to Erik Janeba for his contributions over the past years.
Beetsma will participate in the next Advisory Board meeting, scheduled for June 11, where the AIReF’s strategic plans for the coming year will be discussed.

Board members are individuals of recognized national and international prestige. All have at least ten years of experience in budget analysis, evaluation, and economic and/or financial analysis. They operate with full independence and autonomy in carrying out their functions and have access to any information they deem necessary. In addition to plenary meetings, the advisors maintain a permanent dialogue with AIReF on the lines of analysis, tools, or methodologies commonly defined for advisory purposes.
