The president of the Independent Authority for Fiscal Responsibility (AIReF), Cristina Herrero, took part today in a colloquium on EU fiscal rules organised by Fundación Alternativas, where views were exchanged on the new EU fiscal framework proposed by the European Commission. Cristina Herrero explained that although the proposal points towards a more flexible framework insofar as it allows adaptation to the situation of each country, it is also more demanding as it requires a greater commitment to the debt reduction paths of each country and strengthens the mechanisms to promote compliance.

This proposal is in line with AIReF’s positions as it reinforces the medium-term vision of fiscal policy and focuses on sustainability by facilitating differentiated paths for countries that respond to their fiscal reality, an essential requirement for them to be credible and viable. It also seeks paths that are compatible with growth, making it possible to incorporate reforms and investments with a positive impact on sustainability into fiscal strategies.

The president of AIReF took part in the colloquium together with the Secretary of State for the Economy and Business Support, Gonzalo García; the managing partner of AFI, César Cantalapiedra; and the partner in charge of international taxation at PwC Spain, Roberta Poza. The Executive Vice-President of Fundación Alternativas, Diego López Garrido, was in charge of moderating the colloquium.
